Marc Auriacombe is a Professor of Addictology and Psychiatry at the University of Bordeaux, Faculty of Medicine. He leads the addictology courses and holds key roles in both research and clinical care, including leading the Phenomenology and Determinants of Appetitive Behaviors team at the SanPsy laboratory and directing the Addiction Department at Charles Perrens Hospital Center. He also holds an international academic position as an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
His research focuses on the involuntary loss of control over substance use (alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs) and behavioral addictions (gaming, screen use, food). He aims to identify prognostic markers, understand the persistence of addictive behaviors, and develop innovative therapeutic options. A significant part of his work involves digital medicine, particularly the development and use of conversational agents to enhance early detection and patient autonomy in addiction treatment.
Marc Auriacombe has been recognized with several international honors, including:
- 2019 Nyswander/Dole “Marie” Award (American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence)
- 2017 Grand Prix for Original Research (Actions Addictions - Albatros)
He actively contributes to public discourse on addiction through media appearances and public talks, covering topics such as vulnerability factors in addiction, early identification of at-risk individuals, and the role of digital tools in future treatment paradigms. He is involved in both general public outreach and specialized academic publications.
