Mara Metcalf is a Part-Time Lecturer at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts University since 1991. She teaches painting, drawing, and mixed media. Her work explores themes of materiality, nature, and spatial relationships through unconventional techniques like sewing and unstretched fabric installations.

Research Focus: Metcalf’s practice challenges traditional painting by using textiles, pins, and sewing machines to create layered, transient forms. Her work investigates human-environment connections and the fragility of form through abstract compositions. Recent exhibitions include de-natured (Salve Regina University, 2023) and A Confluence of Place and Space (Bristol Community College, 2024).

Curatorial Work: Metcalf has curated exhibitions focusing on artists exploring environmental themes, including de-natured and a group show on materiality and imagination.
