Professor Maohai Xie is affiliated with the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science at The University of Hong Kong. He holds the academic rank of Professor and has served as Department Head (2017–2019) and President of the Hong Kong Physical Society (2009–2013).
- B.Eng. (Tianjin University, 1985)
- M.Sc. (Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1988)
- Ph.D. (University of London, 1994)
Professor Xie's research focuses on experimental condensed matter physics, with an emphasis on quantum materials and two-dimensional materials. His work includes thin film growth via molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE), surface characterization using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), electron diffraction, and photoelectron spectroscopy. Recent studies investigate the synthesis, electronic properties, and topological states of 2D materials like MoSe2 and WSe2 monolayers.
His publications highlight advancements in molecular-beam epitaxy, quantum confinement, and topological insulators. Key trends include domain boundary formation, intervalley quantum interference, and midgap metallic states in 2D systems. Collaborative work often involves material synthesis, defect analysis, and interlayer coupling studies.
Professor Xie has secured significant research grants, including the NSFC/RGC Joint Research Scheme and Collaborative Research Fund (CRF), focusing on polymorphic transition-metal dichalcogenides and 2D material device applications.
