Phil King

Phil King is Professor of Physics at the University of St Andrews School of Physics and Astronomy, where he directs the Centre for Designer Quantum Materials. His research maps electronic states in quantum materials using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).

Research Focus: Electronic structure engineering of transition metal oxides and 2D materials through molecular-beam epitaxy and advanced spectroscopy. Recent work includes discovery of giant Rashba spin-splitting in delafossites, strain-tuned Lifshitz transitions, and topological surface states. The group develops novel ARPES instrumentation and collaborates at international synchrotrons.

Teaching: Leads courses on Advanced Condensed Matter Physics and Modern Topics in Condensed Matter, coordinating final-year research projects.

Research group focuses on quantum material synthesis and electronic structure characterization with state-of-the-art MBE and ARPES systems.
