Carolina de Almeida Marques is a Lecturer in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics at the University of St Andrews, School of Physics and Astronomy. She holds a PhD in Physics from the same institution (2022) and served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Zürich from 2022 to 2024. Her research focuses on quantum materials, surface science, and electronic structure analysis using advanced spectroscopic techniques like angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).
Key research interests include Van Hove singularities, spin-orbit coupling effects, superconductivity, and correlated electron systems. Her work explores phenomena such as magnetoelastic coupling in ferromagnets, Lifshitz transitions in ruthenates, and manipulation of electronic nematicity. Recent studies emphasize engineering electronic band structures in two-dimensional materials and surface layers to uncover novel quantum phases.
Marques has published extensively in high-impact journals like Nature Physics and npj Quantum Materials. Her datasets, available via institutional repositories, include experimental and theoretical analyses of Sr-based ruthenates and other quantum materials. Collaborations span international teams, addressing topics like quasiparticle interference and hidden dimensions in correlated electron systems.
