Manvi Bhalla is a PhD student at the University of British Columbia’s Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES), supported by the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship. She holds a Master of Science and serves as a guest lecturer, integrating her expertise in decolonized approaches into teaching. As an activist-scholar, she co-founded Shake Up The Establishment and missINFORMED, focusing on climate justice and gender-diverse health advocacy. Her research bridges environmental justice and public health, emphasizing intersectional methodologies.
Education: Current PhD candidate (UBC IRES), MSc holder (not specified). Previous work includes community organizing across over 15 years.
Research Interests: Centered on collaborative governance, environmental and cultural values, and health equity. She employs critical policy analysis, participatory action workshops, and arts-based methods to address systemic inequities in environmental health policy. Current projects include co-developing submissions for Canada’s National Environmental Strategy consultation with South Asian communities.
Publications: Over a dozen peer-reviewed articles and a co-edited book, Practicing Rest, Recovery, Resistance, which provides frameworks for intersectional climate action. Recent work explores pandemic communication barriers in South Asian communities and institutional complicity in climate crises.
Awards/Grants: SSHRC Doctoral Scholarship, recognized as one of Canada’s Top 25 Under 25 Environmentalists and Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders. Recipient of the 2022 Youth Eco-Hero Award. Active in securing grants for community-based research.
Lab/Team: Part of UBC’s IRES network, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams on environmental health and policy. Engages with grassroots organizations to co-create equitable solutions.
