Manuja Premaratne is an Adjunct Lecturer at the Peninsula Clinical School, Monash University, affiliated with the Victorian Heart Institute (VHI). He is a practicing cardiologist and Head of Cardiac Imaging at Peninsula Health, where he leads advancements in cardiac imaging technologies and clinical protocols.
His research interests include:
- Coronary plaque and its role in prognostication
- Infective endocarditis
- Appropriate use of cardiac imaging
- Novel applications of machine learning in cardiology
- Quality improvement in radiology departments
His recent publications (2022–2023) reflect a strong focus on diagnostic accuracy, gender disparities in cardiac care, emergency department imaging, and innovative uses of CT and ultrasound. These works span cardiology, radiology, and emergency medicine, emphasizing clinical applicability, patient safety, and equity in healthcare delivery. Topics include MINOCA in women, point-of-care ultrasound, CT coronary angiography, and pandemic-era radiology practices.

He has served as a co-investigator on grants from the Heart Foundation and the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund. He supervises third- and fifth-year medical students at Monash and acts as an examiner for the Peninsula Clinical School. He is also an active contributor to professional societies, having served on the Annual Scientific Meeting Committee and International Regional Committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT), and as a Local Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) from 2015 to 2022.
Premaratne leads the Siemens Luminary Site CT Lab at Peninsula Health, one of only two such sites in Australia and New Zealand, highlighting his role in cutting-edge cardiac imaging innovation. He is a reviewer for national and international cardiology journals and an invited speaker at international conferences.
