Dr. Manuela Dobre serves as a Lecturer in the Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest, where she specializes in Byzantine history with particular expertise in Byzantium's relations with the West during the Middle Ages. Her academic career demonstrates consistent focus on identity formation, cultural boundaries, and mentalities in the late Byzantine period, especially the 15th century.
Her research interests encompass six interconnected areas: History of the Byzantine Empire, Byzantium's relations with the West in the Middle Ages, ecclesiastical organization of the medieval Christian world, history of mentalities, identity and otherness, and gender history. This multidisciplinary approach allows her to examine Byzantine perspectives on Western identity through multiple lenses, analyzing how cultural, religious, and political factors shaped Byzantine worldview during critical periods of Western-Byzantine interaction.
Dr. Dobre's publication record shows consistent scholarly output since the 1990s, with particular productivity in the 2000s-2010s. Her work appears in international venues including French academic presses and Southeast European journals, demonstrating cross-cultural scholarly engagement. The thematic evolution of her publications reveals deepening exploration of how Byzantine authors conceptualized Western identity, geographical space, and cultural boundaries during the empire's final centuries.
Her teaching portfolio at the University of Bucharest reflects her research expertise through specialized courses covering Byzantine-Western relations across multiple centuries, Byzantine religious institutions, art and ideology, and gender perspectives. Notably, she connects historical study to contemporary relevance through courses examining medieval themes in modern mass culture and Byzantine religious heritage in Romania.
