His research focuses on the political, cultural, and religious dynamics of the Byzantine Empire and its interactions with the Balkan states, particularly Serbia and Bulgaria, in the post-1204 and pre-1453 periods. He has led significant projects like the 'Christian Culture in the Balkans in the Middle Ages' initiative since 2011.
Key research themes include the evolution of Byzantine influence in peripheral regions, medieval diplomacy, and the interplay between imperial and religious institutions. His publications highlight the resilience of Byzantine cultural networks beyond Constantinople's fall, analyzing figures like King Milutin of Serbia and the Komnenos dynasty. He served as Editor-in-Chief for The Balkans and the Byzantine World (2016) and contributes to Byzantinische Zeitschrift's editorial board. Academic advising includes co-supervising a 2019 Ph.D. thesis at EHESS, Paris.
Publications span 2013–2018, emphasizing Byzantine-Slavic relations, medieval royal marriages, and the re-evaluation of Serbia’s position within the Byzantine oikoumene. His work bridges historiography and material evidence, offering fresh perspectives on post-Byzantine Balkan identity formation.
