Dr. Manuel Tong Koecklin is a Research Fellow in the Economics of Trade at the University of Sussex Business School and the UK Trade Policy Observatory. His primary affiliation is with the Department of Economics. He previously held positions at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (2020–2022) and the Economic and Social Research Institute in Dublin (2017–2020). He earned a PhD and MSc in Economics from the University of Sussex, alongside a BSc in Economics from Universidad del Pacifico in Peru.
His research focuses on multi-product firm export dynamics, trade liberalization, and the impact of Brexit on UK trade policies. Key projects examine how UK and EU trade policies affect firms' global value chain engagement, productivity, and export/import decisions. His work bridges theoretical trade models with applied policy analysis.
Teaching expertise includes introductory economics, finance principles, macroeconomics, and econometrics. He collaborates extensively on policy-relevant studies through the UK Trade Policy Observatory, producing reports on CPTPP expansion, developing country trade schemes, and post-Brexit trade preference utilization.
Research outputs span international economics, energy policy, and sustainability, with a focus on translating complex trade dynamics into actionable insights for policymakers. His work frequently engages with contemporary geopolitical trade challenges and their socio-economic implications.
