معرفی
Dr. Manuel L. Penichet is a Professor in both the Department of Surgery and the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics (MIMG) at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. With an extensive research portfolio spanning over two decades, Dr. Penichet leads multiple NIH-funded projects focused on innovative cancer immunotherapies, particularly antibody-based approaches targeting specific receptors in cancer cells.
Dr. Penichet's research centers on developing novel antibody-based cancer therapies, with particular emphasis on targeting the transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) and HER2/neu for various malignancies including breast cancer, multiple myeloma, and AIDS-related non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His work explores the therapeutic potential of IgE antibodies, nanopolymers, and viral-like particles as delivery systems for cancer treatment. A significant portion of his research investigates how antibody-cytokine fusion proteins can enhance anti-tumor immune responses and improve cancer therapy outcomes.
Analysis of Dr. Penichet's recent publications reveals a strong trend toward translational research with direct clinical applications. His work demonstrates increasing sophistication in targeting specific cancer pathways while minimizing off-target effects. The research shows particular innovation in leveraging the immune system's natural mechanisms, such as using IgE antibodies which trigger powerful allergic-type immune responses against cancer cells.
Dr. Penichet has secured substantial research funding through multiple NIH grants, including several R01 projects. His most significant grants include 'A Novel Strategy Targeting TfR1 for the Prevention/Treatment of AIDS-related NHL' (NIH R01CA196266), 'Immunological Basis of Health Disparities in Multiple Myeloma' (NIH R21CA193953), and 'A Novel Anti-HER2/neu IgE for Breast Cancer Therapy' (NIH R01CA181115). His research program has produced over 100 publications with significant impact in the field of cancer immunotherapy.
Dr. Penichet maintains an active research laboratory focused on cancer immunology and therapeutic development. His team employs a multidisciplinary approach combining molecular biology, immunology, and nanotechnology to develop novel cancer treatments. The lab collaborates extensively with other UCLA researchers and institutions to translate basic discoveries into potential clinical applications, particularly in the areas of targeted antibody therapies and cancer vaccine development.
