Dr. Manuel Hijano is an Associate Professor and Director of Studies in Hispanic Studies at Durham University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures. He is a member of the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. His research focuses on medieval Iberian historiography, particularly Castilian chronicles and epic poetry, with a specialization in textual scholarship and critical editing. He has published extensively on Alfonso X's Estoria de España and the interplay between oral epic traditions and historical writing in 13th-14th century Castile.
His current projects include critical editions of the Historia menos atajante and Historia hasta 1288 dialogada, alongside a monograph on the Castilian epic's influence on Spanish historiography. He supervises PhD students in medieval Iberian literature and history, emphasizing the relationship between literary and historical narratives.
His publications analyze chronicle poetics, manuscript traditions, and the political dimensions of medieval historiography. Notable works include Estoria del fecho de los godos: edición y estudio (2021) and articles on Juan Manuel's Libro de las armas and the Crónica manuelina. His work bridges textual criticism with cultural and political analysis, offering insights into how medieval authors shaped historical memory.
