Manuel Friese is a Professor of Neuroimmunology at the University of Hamburg and director of the Institute of Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis (INIMS). He leads translational research bridging molecular neuroimmunology, neurobiology, and clinical care, focusing on inflammatory and neurodegenerative aspects of neuroimmunological diseases.
Education:
- MD from University of Hamburg (2001)
- Neurology training at Universities of Tübingen and Hamburg
- Postdoctoral training at University of Oxford (2004–2008)
His research spans understanding pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS), immune-CNS interactions, neurodegeneration mechanisms, and developing novel therapies including kinase inhibitors and neuroprotective strategies. Publications highlight cross-disciplinary approaches combining experimental models, biomarker discovery, and clinical translation.
Scientific Awards:
- Emmy Noether Research Fellow (DFG)
Current projects include DFG-funded investigations into neuroinflammation (FR 1720/28-1), neurodegenerative pathways (SFB 1328 A06), and translational immunology (SFB 1328 A16). His work emphasizes methodological diversity, from iPSC models to clinical trials.
