PD Dr. Manfred Drack is a researcher at the Institute of Evolution and Ecology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Tübingen. His work bridges biology, systems theory, and biomimetics, with a focus on evolutionary biology of invertebrates and the conceptual foundations of biological design. He holds a doctorate from the University of Vienna and has held research positions in Austria and Germany.
- PhD in Biology/Ecology, University of Vienna (2002)
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, HTL Wels (1991)
- Diploma in Biology/Ecology, University of Vienna (1998)
Dr. Drack's research centers on biomimetics, exploring how biological principles can inform engineering and how technical models can deepen biological understanding. His interests include systems biology, the philosophy of biological function, and the epistemological foundations of biomimetic knowledge. He is particularly interested in the work of Ludwig von Bertalanffy and Paul A. Weiss, contributing significantly to the history and philosophy of systems theory in biology.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the theoretical clarification of biomimetics, bioinspired materials, functional morphology, and the conceptual integration of biology and engineering. He leads a DFG-funded project on the epistemological and ontological foundations of biomimetics, indicating active and recognized research.

Dr. Drack is an active member of the biomimetics research community, organizing workshops, presenting at conferences, and collaborating with philosophers and scientists. He is involved with the advisory board of a foundational biomimetics project and has hosted visiting researchers. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary dialogue, particularly between the life sciences, engineering, and philosophy.
