Manel Lacorte

Manel Lacorte is an Associate Professor of Spanish Applied Linguistics and Program Head of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also an Affiliate Faculty member at the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center and part of the Maryland Language Science Center. Dr. Lacorte holds degrees from the University of Barcelona (B.A.), University of Illinois at Chicago (M.A.), and the University of Edinburgh (Ph.D.). His research focuses on second language pedagogy, heritage language education, classroom interaction, and sociopolitical aspects of language teaching. He has authored/co-authored numerous books, including The Routledge Handbook of Hispanic Applied Linguistics and Multiliteracies Pedagogy and Language Learning, and serves as an editor for journals like the Journal of Spanish Language Teaching. He has directed the School of Spanish at Middlebury College since 2009, emphasizing innovative teaching methodologies and program articulation.

He is a certified ACTFL OPI tester and workshop facilitator, emphasizing practical assessment strategies in language education.

His professional roles include directing language programs, coordinating research initiatives like PArLAR at Middlebury, and promoting multilingual pedagogies.
