Professor Mandy Man-Sum Cheng is a distinguished academic in the School of Accounting at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), specializing in behavioral management accounting. With a career spanning since 1998 when she joined UNSW after working as an accountant with BHP, she has established herself as a leading researcher examining how management accounting practices influence managers' behaviors, judgments, and decision-making processes.
Her research focuses on strategic performance management systems such as the balanced scorecard, capital investment decisions, incentive and compensation scheme designs, the use of accounting information in negotiations, and Integrated Reporting. Drawing primarily on psychology theories, she employs experimental approaches to investigate individual responses to management accounting information and control systems. Her work bridges accounting with behavioral science, contributing significantly to understanding how accounting information shapes organizational behavior.
Professor Cheng serves as Editor of the Journal of Management Accounting Research and Accounting and Finance, and sits on the editorial boards of Accounting, Organization and Society, Management Accounting Research, and Australian Journal of Management. Her research has been published in leading accounting journals including The Accounting Review, Accounting, Organizations and Society, and Contemporary Accounting Research. She has secured significant external funding through ARC Discovery and Linkage grants, and co-organizes the Global Management Accounting Research Symposium.
