Mander Ülo

Ülo Mander is a Professor of Physical Geography & Landscape Ecology and Head of the Department of Geography at the University of Tartu, Estonia. His academic career spans over four decades with visiting professorships at institutions including Ohio State University (USA), IRSTEA (France), and the Agricultural University of Norway. He holds a B.Sc. (1977) and Ph.D. (1983) from the University of Tartu.

• Current positions: Head of Geography Department, Visiting Professor at IRSTEA Paris
• Editorial roles: Member of 7 international journals' editorial boards since 1994
• Leadership: Led 48 international conferences and served on EU evaluation panels (2000-2011)

Research Focus: Landscape-scale nutrient dynamics, wetland engineering, and environmental sustainability. Key areas include:

• Nutrient retention in agricultural watersheds
• Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment
• Greenhouse gas fluxes from peatlands
• Land-use change impacts on biogeochemistry

Collaborations: Coordinated 10 EU FP projects (including IPCC Wetlands Guidelines 2013) and authored major contributions to international environmental frameworks.

• Supervision: 27 completed PhDs and 14 ongoing doctoral researchers
