Manbir Nagra

Manbir Nagra is an Honorary Visiting Senior Fellow at the Vision and Eye Research Institute, affiliated with the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care. As an optometrist, educator, and researcher, they specialize in myopia, contact lenses, and health technologies. Their career includes roles as a Lecturer and Reader in Optometry and Vision Science, recognized for innovative teaching highlighted by a 2018 Association of Optometrists award nomination. Nagra’s research spans refractive error mechanisms, contact lens innovation, and telehealth applications, particularly addressing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Education includes a PhD in myopia, MA in Academic Practice, and BSc (Hons) in Optometry. They have contributed to high-impact studies like the MiSight clinical trial and held visiting scholar positions at UC Berkeley and Spain’s CSIC. Nagra maintains active consultancy in the optical sector and has published extensively on topics ranging from autorefraction techniques to smartphone-based ophthalmoscopy.

Awards include shortlisting for the 2018 Association of Optometrists’ lecturing award. Their work bridges clinical practice and technology, exemplified by research on telehealth adaptations for eye care services and development of diagnostic tools like objective grading software for conjunctival hyperaemia.
