Dr. Malte Jansen is a Principal Research Fellow in Electricity Markets and Systems and Research Director at the Centre for Net Zero Market Design at University College London's Bartlett School of Environment, Energy & Resources. He simultaneously serves as a Lecturer in Energy and Sustainability at the University of Sussex's Science and Policy Research Unit (SPRU), a Visiting Researcher at Imperial College London's Centre for Environmental Policy, and a Special Consultant at the Technical University of Denmark's Department of Wind and Energy Systems.
Dr. Jansen holds a Doctoral Degree in Renewable Energy and Energy Economics, a Master of Engineering, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Energy and Environmental Management, all from the University of Flensburg. His academic journey includes significant roles at Imperial College London as Co-Convenor of the Energy Policy Option for the MSc in Environmental Technology (2019-2022) and Postdoctoral Research Associate (2018-2022), as well as positions at Fraunhofer IEE, ERM, and the Technical University of Denmark.
Dr. Jansen's research focuses on the critical intersection of energy markets, finance, and policy, with particular emphasis on achieving net-zero emissions through innovative market designs. His work spans several key areas:
- Contracts for Difference (CfDs) as mechanisms for risk management and market creation in renewable energy
- Economics and feasibility of green hydrogen production through offshore wind and electrolysis
- Design of electricity markets to support high renewable energy penetration
- Policy frameworks for offshore wind development and financing
- Integration of renewable energy into existing power systems
- Subsidy-free renewable energy project economics
His publication record shows a clear trajectory toward practical, policy-relevant research with significant real-world impact. The most recent publications demonstrate deep engagement with offshore wind economics, hydrogen production costs, and market design innovations, particularly his influential work on Contracts for Difference published in Nature Energy. His research on subsidy-free offshore wind has been featured in major publications like The Guardian, The Times, Forbes, and Der Spiegel, fundamentally shifting policy discussions toward the viability of large-scale renewable projects without direct financial support.
Dr. Jansen has secured over £1.5 million in research grants and consultancy services throughout his career. Notable projects include:
- Co-Investigator and IDLES Phase III Lead Investigator on 'The cost of green offshore hydrogen production in UK waters' at Sussex
- Research Co-Investigator on the UKERC Flexible Fund project 'Delivering a 40 GW offshore wind target' at Imperial College (£300,000)
- Research funding from the Alan Turing Institute for nine months of Research Associate funding
- PI for 'Control Reserve from Wind and Solar' project at Fraunhofer IEE (over €1 million)
Dr. Jansen co-founded PowerSwarm, a professional network connecting over 650 energy professionals from industry and academia, fostering knowledge exchange and innovation in the energy sector. His work has received extensive media coverage with over 150 appearances across major outlets, and has directly influenced policy discussions including regular meetings with members of the UK House of Lords and contributions to parliamentary proceedings in Germany. He recently led the University of Sussex's contribution to the UK DESNZ Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA).
