Malte Doehne is a Researcher at the Department of Sociology, University of Zurich, where he has served as assistant to Prof. Katja Rost since 2016. Currently completing his Habilitation, he leads two research projects at the intersection of digitalization, innovation, and inequality while maintaining affiliations with the Duke Network Analysis Center and UZH's Digital Society Initiative 'Work' group.
His academic foundation includes economics studies at the University of Witten/Herdecke and a 2015 doctorate in sociology of markets from Zeppelin University, featuring research stays at Columbia University and Duke's Network Analysis Center. Prior to Zurich, he was a postdoctoral fellow at LMU Munich's Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy.
Dr. Doehne's research investigates how institutional structures and cultural expectations channel social outcomes through unequal access to relational resources. His signature concept of 'relational ecologies' examines historically sedimented pathways that privilege certain forms of recognition and mobility, enabling analysis of collective action, innovation diffusion, and elite formation as context-sensitive responses to opportunity structures. Current projects focus on network interventions in historical contexts, gender norm transformation, and digital knowledge work.
His 2023-2025 publications reveal consistent application of network analysis across diverse domains: market sociology (wine quality competition), virtual team dynamics, governance by lotteries, and academic knowledge production. A unifying theme is the context-dependence of social networks in shaping inequality, with methodologies emphasizing quantitative network approaches.
He directs a newly funded research program on digital device usage in work settings, including the SWeLL study on student laptop practices. Dr. Doehne actively presents at major conferences including the German Sociological Association Congress (September 2025) and European Sociological Association events, while mentoring through project-based collaborations.
