Malin Wennström is a Researcher and Principal Investigator at Lund University within the Faculty of Medicine, primarily affiliated with the Department of Clinical Sciences, Malmö. She leads research at MultiPark (Multidisciplinary research focused on Parkinson's disease) and works on Cognitive disorders.
Research Interests: Her work focuses on identifying early mechanisms and biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD) through translational studies on human samples (brain, retina, CSF). Key areas include:
- Impact of AD risk factors (stress, inflammation, amyloidogenesis)
- Glycogen metabolism alterations
- Amyloid peptide toxicity
- Pathology-specific molecule secretion
- Retinal and neurovascular pathology
- TDP-43 proteinopathies
Research Outputs: Recent publications address:
- CD59 isoforms in neurotransmitter regulation
- Retinal tau uptake imaging
- Proteomic disease progression
- Perivascular TDP-43 in AD
- Dietary impacts on diabetes-related neuroinflammation
Grants & Projects:
- Alzheimer’s Pathogenesis in Retina (Ögonfonden, 2025-2026)
- TDP-43 vascular pathology (Olle Engkvist Foundation, 2023-2025)
- Retina-Brain Nexus (Alzheimer's Society, Swedish Research Council, ongoing)
Collaborations span national and international teams, with recent work involving the Netherlands Brain Bank and Oskar Hansson's lab. She supervises J. Santiago in doctoral research.
