Malia Bruker is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication at Florida State University’s College of Communication & Information (CCI). She specializes in documentary filmmaking, blending non-fiction with experimental genres like dance film and 360-degree technology. Her work has screened at festivals including Athens International Film Festival and Chicago Underground Film Festival. Bruker holds a BA in Communication (2005) from FSU and an MFA in Film & Media Arts (2013) from Temple University.
Her research focuses on documentary history, ethics, and social justice, particularly through immersive technologies. She teaches Digital Media Production, post-production techniques, and 360-degree filmmaking. A recent project commissioned by FSU’s Center for the Advancement of Human Rights explores trauma and healing via 360 VR and dance.
Bruker joined FSU in 2014 and emphasizes creative expression in her teaching. She is recognized for integrating real-world opportunities into curricula, such as the Digital Video Certificate for graduate students. Beyond academia, she enjoys outdoor activities, travel, and has a passion for birding and international cinema.
