
Malgosia Fitzmaurice

Professor Malgosia Fitzmaurice holds a chair in Public International Law at Queen Mary University of London's School of Law. She concurrently serves as a part-time Nippon Foundation Professor of Marine Environmental Protection at the International Maritime Law Institute (IMO). Her research focuses on international environmental law, treaty law, and indigenous peoples' rights. She earned an LLM and PhD from the University of Warsaw.
Her academic contributions include seminal works such as Treaties in Motion (Cambridge UP, 2020) and Whaling and International Law (Cambridge UP, 2015). She has advised governments including the Republic of Marshall Islands on climate change litigation and served as a legal expert for the International Court of Justice's whaling judgment analysis.
Professor Fitzmaurice teaches at The Hague Academy of International Law and participates in UN Fellowship Programs. She co-edits the International Community Law Review and leads Queen Mary's Studies in International Law book series. Her work bridges theoretical legal frameworks with practical environmental governance challenges.
Recent engagements include lecturing at Berkeley Law School, Kobe University, and Panthéon-Sorbonne University. She has been recognized with a Doctorate Honoris Causa (2021) and full membership in the Institut de Droit International.
