Dr Malcolm Stewart is a respected academic and educator at the University of Oxford, serving as Director of the Chemistry Teaching Laboratories (CTL) and a Stipendiary Lecturer at St Hugh’s College since 2001. His work focuses on innovating practical chemistry education, curriculum design, and addressing educational inequities through outreach programs.
He holds a PhD from the University of Dundee and has held postdoctoral positions at institutions including the University of St. Andrews and Newcastle University. Stewart’s academic qualifications include a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (2004) and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2008).
His research interests span chemical education, particularly the development of interdisciplinary practical courses, overcoming ‘troublesome knowledge’ in chemistry (e.g., acid/base concepts and 3D molecular visualization), and educational outreach initiatives. Key projects include the award-winning CTL curriculum and the #DryLabs20 global network addressing pandemic-era laboratory teaching challenges. His work has been recognized with University of Oxford teaching awards (2006, 2008) and a Vice-Chancellor Award (2020).
Stewart actively contributes to widening participation in STEM through programs like the UNIQ course and the Chemistry Bridging Course. He co-authored educational books, including the upcoming transition-to-university guide with Drs Birembaut and Clugston. His leadership roles include membership in the RSC Tertiary Education Group and the RSC Educational Divisional Council.
