Dr. Malcolm McNeill is Senior Lecturer in Arts Education and Director of the SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art at SOAS University of London. He serves on the Outreach and Scholarships Sub-Boards for Southeast Asian Art and acts as Learning and Teaching Convenor in the School of Arts. His expertise bridges academia and museum practice, with prior roles at Christie’s (2017-2020), the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and National Palace Museum Taipei.

His research focuses on Chinese and Buddhist visual culture, text-image relationships, and critical curation studies. He explores object-based learning in digital and physical environments, informed by his professional experience in museum collection care, exhibition design, and art market dynamics. His 2021 publication examines medieval Chan figure paintings’ interplay between hagiography and visual representation.
Malcolm supervises PhD student Jennifer Fleming and contributes to educational programs at SOAS. He speaks Mandarin and has worked as a translator for major museums in China and Taiwan, including Henan Provincial Museum. He was a council member of the Oriental Ceramics Society (2017) and co-developed the Society’s 2021 centenary exhibition at SOAS’s Brunei Gallery.
