Malcolm Byrne serves as Deputy Director and Director of Research at the National Security Archive, where he has worked since 1986. He also teaches history courses at The George Washington University and has been a Research Affiliate at MIT's Center for International Studies since 2006. Byrne directs the U.S.-Iran Relations Project and has previously coordinated major documentation projects on the Iran-Contra affair and U.S.-Soviet relations during the Cold War.
His educational background includes a degree from Tufts University and an M.A. in Soviet studies and economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Before joining the National Security Archive, he worked as Assistant Editor for News Systems at The Washington Post and as an editor of Soviet/East European Report.
Byrne's research focuses on US-Iran relations, Cold War history, US foreign policy, and intelligence history. His work emphasizes the importance of declassified documents in understanding historical events and contemporary international relations. He has organized major international conferences on US-Iran relations, the collapse of US-Soviet détente, Cold War crises in Eastern Europe, and the Vietnam War.
