William Inboden serves as Executive Vice President and Provost of the University of Texas at Austin (effective August 1, 2025), holding the William Powers, Jr. Chair with joint appointments in the School of Civic Leadership and Department of History. He concurrently serves as Peterson Senior Fellow at Johns Hopkins SAIS' Kissinger Center and Director of the Alexander Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education at the University of Florida.
His research focuses on Cold War history, American foreign policy, and national security strategy. Key interests include presidential decision-making in national security, religion's role in international relations, and historical analysis of containment policy. His work bridges academic scholarship with real-world policy application through extensive government service.
His 2022 publication The Peacemaker analyzes Reagan's Cold War strategy across multiple global crises. The work reveals patterns in U.S. foreign policy development during ideological conflicts while examining nuclear threat reduction and democratic expansion mechanisms.

As an educator, Inboden received the 'Texas 10' teaching award from Texas Exes Alumni Association and was named 'LBJ School Lecturer of the Year.' His courses 'Presidential Decision-making in National Security' and 'Ethics and International Affairs' were voted top classes at the LBJ School. He has testified before Congress and advised multiple federal agencies through roles on the National Intelligence Council and CIA Historical Advisory Panel.
Inboden leads research teams at the Clements Center for National Security and Strauss Center for International Security and Law, directing projects on historical policy analysis and contemporary security challenges with emphasis on primary source documentation from declassified materials.
