Dr. Maisha Wester is a Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield’s School of English, sponsored by the British Academy’s Global Professorship fellowship (September 2020–2024). Her home institution is Indiana University, Bloomington. She specializes in Gothic literature and Horror Film, examining racial discourses and anti-Black language, particularly how these genres reflect and challenge oppressive socioeconomic narratives. Her research explores the intersection of Gothic traditions with Black diasporic cultural responses, linking historical and contemporary racial injustices to movements like Black Lives Matter.
Teaching includes courses such as 'Getting Out: Social Thrillers and the Art of Cultural Critique' and 'Black Horror Fiction and the Nightmare of Race,' focusing on sociopolitical themes in U.S. horror and Black feminist literature. Her fellowship investigates Gothic influences on anti-Black rhetoric from the genre’s origins to today.
