Maija Butters is a University Lecturer in the Department of Study of Religions at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Theology. She holds a PhD in Study of Religion (2021) and has extensive academic training including MA in Cultural Anthropology (2001) and studies in South Asian/Tibetan Studies. Her research focuses on death studies, ritual practices, and the intersection of religion with cultural anthropology.
Key research areas include:
- Deathscapes and worldview minority cemeteries
- Ethnographic studies of religious learning
- Anthropology of the Anthropocene
- Palliative care rituals
She leads the MeDea project on meaningful deathscapes (2024-2028) and participates in the LeNeRe project on new religious learning (2022-2023). Her 2022 Donner Institute Prize recognizes her contributions to religious studies.
Active in editorial roles for Thanatos journal and peer review of Mortality and Anthropological Quarterly. Supervised master's theses on religious conversion processes.
