Dr. Mahmoud Torabi is a Full Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, and holds an adjunct professorship in the Department of Statistics. His research focuses on developing biostatistical methods to address health challenges, particularly in spatial statistics, small area estimation, and big data analysis. He leads a team at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM), advancing population health research and translating findings into healthcare practice.
Education: PhD in Statistics (Carleton University, with the University Medal for Best Doctoral Dissertation), MSc and BSc in Statistics (National University of Iran). His work spans diseases such as asthma, colorectal cancer, and infectious diseases like influenza and tuberculosis. He has published in top journals including Statistics in Medicine and Biometrics, and served as President of the Survey Methods Section of the Statistical Society of Canada (2018).
Research themes emphasize novel biostatistical models for communicable and non-communicable diseases. He actively mentors graduate students in Master’s and PhD programs and collaborates internationally. His contributions include groundbreaking work on the effective reproductive number in pandemics and spatial epidemiological modeling.
