Magnus Rønning is a Professor and Vice Dean for Research at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He leads the Department of Chemical Engineering and oversees research administration within the faculty. His academic background includes a Master's in Chemistry (1994) and a Dr.Ing. in Chemical Engineering (2000), both from NTNU. He has held postdoctoral positions at Penn State University (USA) and Statoil Research Centre, followed by a research sabbatical at Stanford University (2016–2017).
- Education:
- Master's in Chemistry, NTNU (1994)
- Dr.Ing., Chemical Engineering, NTNU (2000)
Research Interests: Focuses on catalytic processes and materials for energy and environmental applications. Key areas include operando characterization of catalysts using synchrotron-based X-ray techniques, hydrogen production, ammonia decomposition, selective catalytic reduction of NOx, and development of sustainable fuels from natural gas, CO₂, and biomass. His work also explores photocatalysis and carbon nanomaterials to replace critical raw materials.
Professional Contributions: Coordinated 2 EU projects, partnered in multiple others, and participated in 2 national SFI centers (Strategic Research Centers). Advised over 50 master's students, 30 PhD candidates, and 13 postdocs. Active in the iCSI SFI research initiative.
Labs/Teams: Associated with the iCSI SFI (International Center for Sustainable Industry), focusing on sustainable industrial catalysis and process intensification.
