His research focuses on occupational health and safety management, particularly within the Swedish healthcare sector, with significant contributions to understanding workplace wellbeing during extraordinary circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic.
His primary research interests include organizational-level interventions to reduce sickness absence, healthcare worker wellbeing, occupational health management systems, and the impact of pandemics on specialized healthcare providers. Åkerström has conducted extensive research through the COPE Staff study, which examines the psychosocial work environment of maternal and neonatal healthcare workers during the pandemic.
His recent publications (2021-2025) show a strong focus on pandemic-related workplace challenges, with numerous studies examining burnout, moral distress, work conditions, and organizational responses in healthcare settings. Earlier in his career, he conducted environmental health research on benzene exposure in oil refinery workers and heavy metal biomonitoring.
Åkerström collaborates extensively with researchers across the University of Gothenburg and other Swedish institutions, often working with colleagues from occupational medicine, public health, and clinical specialties. His work demonstrates a shift from individual-focused approaches to organizational-level perspectives in workplace health management.
His research methodology includes mixed-method approaches, longitudinal cohort studies, systematic reviews, and process evaluations of intervention programs. Through his work, Åkerström has contributed to evidence-based approaches for improving workplace health systems in public sector organizations, particularly within healthcare.
