Maggie Wentzell is an Associate Professor of Biology at Carthage College, specializing in neurobiology with a focus on the neural mechanisms underlying bias and behavioral change. She earned a B.S. in Biology from Loyola University Chicago and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her work explores unconscious biases through a neurobiological lens, particularly how procedural memory and neural plasticity shape behaviors that perpetuate bias. She has presented widely, including a TEDx Talk (2019) and an NIH seminar (2022), advocating for deliberate behavioral practices to combat systemic inequities.
Prof. Wentzell emphasizes educational equity, advocating for policies that foster inclusive environments. Her research integrates anatomical insights from the brain’s sensory, prefrontal, and motor cortices to dissect the disconnect between conscious beliefs and unconscious behaviors. She champions actionable strategies such as amplifying marginalized voices and institutional policy reforms to achieve lasting cultural shifts.
