Maggie Clinton is a Professor of History at Middlebury College, where she has taught since 2009. She holds a BA from Wesleyan University, an MA and PhD in History from New York University (2009), and an MSW from Columbia University (2021), earning licensure (LMSW) in 2021. Her research bridges history and psychotherapy, focusing on evidence interpretation in historical and clinical contexts. She is the author of Revolutionary Nativism: Fascism and Culture in China, 1925-1937 (Duke UP, 2017) and is currently working on Working Through, exploring intersections between historical and psychotherapeutic evidence. Clinton serves on the editorial board of the Cambridge Elements “History of Fascism” series and is a member of the Asia Critique collective.
Her courses cover modern China, East Asia, fascism, imperialism, and historical methodology. She has led research seminars and supervised senior theses, emphasizing critical approaches to evidence and historiography. Clinton’s work has been supported by major grants from the Mellon Foundation, NEH, and others.
Clinton’s interdisciplinary focus includes global fascism, trans-Pacific relations, and the history of mental health discourses. She integrates film, literature, and archival research into her teaching and scholarship, reflecting her commitment to contextualizing power dynamics in historical narratives.
