Cynthia A. Kierner is a Professor in the Department of History at George Mason University, specializing in early American history, women and gender studies, and disaster history.

Her research explores colonial and revolutionary America, the early republic, gender dynamics in the Old South, and cultural/political responses to historical disasters. She has authored or co-edited eight books and numerous articles, including seminal works like Inventing Disaster (2019) and Beyond the Household (1998).
Her recent work analyzes disasters such as the Richmond Theater Fire (1811) and steamboat explosions in 19th-century America, contextualizing them within gender, sentimentality, and regional identity. Publications span interdisciplinary topics connecting political history, cultural studies, and environmental history.
