Dr. Susan Gaunt Stearns is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Mississippi, affiliated with the Department of History within the College of Liberal Arts. Her research focuses on national expansion, capitalism, and state formation in the decades following the American Revolution, particularly in the trans-Appalachian west and Gulf South regions. She explores how land speculation, commerce, and political economy shaped early American nation-building.
Dr. Stearns holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago (2011). Her work analyzes the integration of the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys into the United States during the 1780s–1790s, emphasizing the role of international trade and settler expansion. She also investigates historical pedagogy, examining how history is taught and learned.
Her publications include Empire of Commerce (under contract with University of Virginia Press) and articles on frontier merchants, federalism, and diplomatic tensions in the Early Republic. Courses taught include Colonial America, Revolutionary America, and Historical Methods.
