Dr. Magdalena Blanz is a postdoctoral researcher at the Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science (VIAS), University of Vienna, and the Austrian Archaeological Institute. She leads the stable isotope ratio preparatory laboratory for bioarchaeological studies and contributes to teaching archaeometry courses.
- Master of Chemistry (MChem), University of Aberdeen (2016)
- PhD, University of Highlands and Islands (2016-2020)
Her research focuses on method development and modern reference data for stable isotope ratio studies, with applications to palaeodietary reconstructions, prehistoric agriculture, and environmental archaeology. Current projects examine the first introductions of domesticated animals and plants into Europe through isotopic analysis of skeletal remains.
Publications center on seaweed consumption by livestock, isotopic impacts of marine fertilization, and Neolithic pastoral practices across Europe. Research areas include bioarchaeology, zooarchaeology, and experimental archaeology, with particular emphasis on stable isotope ratio analyses and trace element geochemistry.
She serves as a committee member of the Austrian Bioarchaeological Society (BAG) and participates in the Human Evolution and Archaeological Sciences (HEAS) research network.
