Magdaléna Rychetská is an Assistant Professor at the Chinese Studies Seminar within the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. Born in 1991 in Čadca, Slovakia, she has established herself as a specialist in religious studies with a focus on Christianity in Chinese societies. Her academic journey began with studies in Cultural Studies of China and Religion at Masaryk University, continued with a Master's in China Studies at Zhejiang University, and culminated in a Ph.D. in the Study of Religion from Masaryk University.
Her educational background includes a 2020 Ph.D. in the Study of Religion with dissertation titled 'Uneasy Encounters: Christian Churches in Authoritarian Regimes of China and Taiwan,' a 2019 MA in Master of China Studies from Zhejiang University, a 2017 BA in Cultural Studies of China, and a 2015 MA in the Study of Religion - both from Masaryk University. Her research interests center on the complex relationship between religious institutions and state power in China and Taiwan, with particular attention to Presbyterian and Catholic churches.
Analysis of her publication record reveals a consistent focus on the intersection of religion and politics in Chinese societies. Her work examines how Christian communities navigate authoritarian governance while maintaining religious identity and autonomy. The most recent publications show an evolution toward examining broader theoretical frameworks for understanding religious-state relations, while maintaining her empirical focus on specific church communities in China and Taiwan. Her research demonstrates increasing sophistication in connecting local religious practices with global religious networks and international relations.
