Magali Fontaine, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Pathology and Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she serves as Medical Director of Transfusion Services. She holds primary appointment in the Department of Pathology and secondary appointment in Medicine.
Education: BA from Lycee Hoche-Versailles (1981), MD from University René Descartes Paris (1989), PhD in Transplant Pathology from University of Illinois at Chicago (2000). Postgraduate training includes fellowships at Harvard Medical School (Brigham & Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital) and Mayo Clinic, with residencies in Surgery and Pathology.
Research Focus: Dr. Fontaine's work bridges transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. She investigates leukocyte activation in transfusion reactions, platelet-RBC interactions, mesenchymal stem cell applications, and pancreatic islet transplantation. Her lab develops standards for cellular therapy manufacturing and evaluates transfusion safety protocols.
