Dr. Maeve Ryan is a Reader in History and Foreign Policy at King’s College London’s Department of War Studies, co-director of the Centre for Grand Strategy, and leads interdisciplinary research on applied history, grand strategy, and international order. She holds a PhD in History from Trinity College Dublin and an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy, focusing on British foreign policy, slavery, humanitarian governance, and environmental security.
Research Interests: Ryan’s research spans modern global history, the history of slavery and abolition, British foreign policy, and the study of world order. She explores how historical insights can inform strategic decision-making in diplomacy and statecraft, particularly regarding climate change, post-Western global order, and modern slavery.
Key Projects: She co-directs the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarship Programme on ‘Interrogating Visions of a Post-Western World’ and collaborates with institutions like the Ax:son Johnson Institute and the University of Cambridge. Her policy engagement includes work with the UK Cabinet Office National Security Secretariat to address modern slavery and geopolitical challenges.
