Mael Guennou is an Assistant Professor at the University of Luxembourg’s Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM), leading the Multifunctional Ferroic Materials (MFM) research group. His primary affiliation is the Department of Physics and Materials Science, located at the Aile Nord – Aile Sud building in Esch-sur-Alzette. Education: Mael began at Supaéro (now ISAE) in space science/engineering, transitioned to solid-state physics with a Master’s at the University of Stuttgart, and earned his PhD at École Centrale Paris (now CentraleSupélec). His postdoctoral research spanned Grenoble (France) and the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague before a 6-year tenure at Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) prior to joining the University of Luxembourg in 2019.
Research focuses on ferroic transitions, symmetry breaking in crystals, and advanced spectroscopic methods (neutron, synchrotron). Key interests include antiferroelectricity, strain engineering, and photovoltaic materials. His work bridges experimental solid-state spectroscopy with large-scale facilities like neutron sources.
Teaching: He directs the Master in Physics program, instructs physics across bachelor-to-PhD levels (e.g., open science policies, solid-state spectroscopy at the doctoral school for science and engineering). Courses include foundational physics for medicine/biology students and specialized doctoral training.
Publications: Over 70 peer-reviewed articles in physics/materials journals, with recent work on bournonite, PbZrO3 films, and antiferroelectric phase stabilization. Highlighted techniques include correlative Raman/cathodoluminescence mapping and helium-implantation strain tuning.
