Madhuri Sopirala

Dr. Madhuri Sopirala is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine. She serves as Director of Infection Prevention at Parkland Health. Previously, she held leadership roles including Chief of Infection Prevention at the VA North Texas Healthcare System and Associate Chief of Clinical Epidemiology at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Her career includes over a decade of experience leading system-wide infection prevention programs, such as the Infection Control Link Nurse Program, which focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

Dr. Sopirala earned her medical degree from Sri Venkatesvara Medical College (India), followed by residency in internal medicine at Mount Carmel Medical Center (Ohio) and an infectious diseases fellowship with a master’s in clinical investigation and epidemiology from Ohio State University. She is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

Her research emphasizes multidrug-resistant organisms, HAIs, and antimicrobial stewardship. Notable achievements include reducing central line-associated bloodstream infections and earning the University of Cincinnati’s IMPACT Award for impactful physician contributions, as well as a New Investigator Award for her study on multidrug-resistant Gram-negative colonization.

Dr. Sopirala has mentored numerous trainees and authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles. Her work bridges clinical practice, epidemiology, and healthcare policy to advance infection control strategies in acute and long-term care settings.
