Madhavi Sunder is the Frank Sherry Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the Georgetown University Law Center, with affiliations at the Harvard Berkman Klein Center. She previously held roles as Senior Associate Dean at UC Davis School of Law and Visiting Professorships at Yale, University of Chicago, and Cornell. Her research bridges intellectual property, technology, women’s rights, and global development, emphasizing issues like access to medicines, cultural appropriation, and IP governance during pandemics. She is an award-winning scholar with over 40 articles in top law reviews and influential books such as From Goods to a Good Life (2012) and Intellectual Property, COVID-19, and the Next Pandemic (2024).
Education: B.A. Harvard University; J.D. Stanford Law School. Clerkship at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. Recognitions include Carnegie Scholar (2006) and Hagler Institute Fellow (2022). She has advised on global legal frameworks, including WIPO’s PatentX course, and serves on the Smithsonian’s DC Regional Council and the Women’s Learning Partnership board.
Research interests focus on IP’s intersection with social justice, racial capitalism, and global equity. Notable works analyze IP’s role in crises, cultural economy, and marginalized communities. Her recent projects address post-pandemic legal reforms and the moral dimensions of IP in a digital age.
