Dr. Madeline J. Lewis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming, where she investigates magmatic processes that shape Earth’s crust and drive volcanic activity.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Geochemistry, California Institute of Technology, 2021
- M.S. in Geology, California Institute of Technology, 2017
- B.S. in Geological Sciences, Indiana University–Bloomington, 2015
Her research merges igneous petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, and field geology to address fundamental questions about how magma reservoirs respond to volcanic eruptions, the timescales over which continental crust forms, and the influence of sea-level fluctuations on mid-ocean-ridge volcanism. She couples mineral and whole-rock chemical data with U-Pb geochronology and thermodynamic modeling, always anchored by careful field observation.
Teaching philosophy: Dr. Lewis emphasizes experiential learning, critical thinking, and inclusivity. She integrates hands-on laboratory exercises, field excursions, and real-world applications to help students connect geologic concepts to societal challenges.
Recent publications span Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology and the Geological Society of America Bulletin, focusing on continental arc petrogenesis in the Sierra Nevada batholith and anomalous volcanism along the Pacific–Antarctic Ridge.
