Madeleine Thorstensen is a PhD Research Fellow at the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) at the University of Oslo, actively contributing to the Investigating Contested Theories on Extreme-Right Terrorism (INCONTEXT) project led by Jacob Aasland Ravndal. Her research examines repression's effects on right-wing terrorism and violence, with a focus on liberal democratic contexts.
Her educational background includes:
- MPhil in Peace and Conflict Studies (University of Oslo)
- BA in International Studies (University of Oslo)
Thorstensen's research centers on the dynamics of right-wing extremism, analyzing how state repression influences extremist violence trajectories. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks in political violence with empirical analysis of terrorism trends, emphasizing policy-relevant insights for democratic societies confronting extremism. She employs mixed-methods approaches including dataset construction, comparative analysis, and longitudinal trend assessment.
Analysis of her publications reveals consistent focus on right-wing terrorism evolution in Western Europe (1990-2022), with particular attention to organizational banning policies and repression's unintended consequences. Her research demonstrates methodological rigor through the RTV Dataset she previously led, establishing longitudinal patterns in extremist violence.
Thorstensen has held significant research leadership roles, serving as former team leader of the Right-Wing Terrorism and Violence (RTV) Dataset and contributing to major collaborative projects with institutions like the Norwegian Police University College. Her current INCONTEXT project involves cross-institutional collaboration on contested theories of extremism.
Her scholarly activities include maintaining active research partnerships within C-REX's ecosystem, contributing to Norway's national security research infrastructure through dataset development, and engaging with law enforcement stakeholders via the Norwegian Police University College collaboration.
