Mack Ruffin, MD, MPH, is a Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and Department of Public Health Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. He is affiliated with the Penn State Cancer Institute's Cancer Control program. His work focuses on cancer prevention and control, particularly colorectal and cervical cancers.
Education includes an MD from The Medical College of Virginia (1980-1984), Family Practice residency at Wake Forest University (1984-1987), and a MPH in Epidemiology and fellowship in Academic Medicine at the University of Minnesota (1987-1989).
Research interests include HPV vaccine promotion, stool microbiome-based colorectal cancer screening, and validation of non-invasive cancer biomarkers. His clinical focus targets improving early detection methods through saliva, stool, and microbiome analysis.
Recent publications emphasize HPV self-sampling interventions in Appalachia and communication strategies to improve screening adherence. Awards include the 2017 Curtis Hames Research Award and 2014 League of Research Excellence Prize.
