Mark B Dignan, PhD, MPH is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine with additional affiliation in Medical Oncology. Since joining UK in 2001 after 18 years at Wake Forest University, he has led NCI-funded cancer control research focused on Appalachian populations through collaborations with primary care practices, public health departments, and AHEC networks.
His research specializes in behavioral interventions for primary and secondary cancer prevention, with emphasis on colorectal and cervical cancer screening implementation in rural communities. He employs mixed-methods approaches to address healthcare disparities, developing multi-level interventions that consider Appalachian cultural values and healthcare system constraints while advancing implementation science frameworks for underserved populations.
Dr. Dignan currently serves as contact MPI for two major NCI initiatives:
- ACCSIS (UH3 CA233282-01): Accelerating Colorectal Cancer Screening through Implementation Science in Appalachia
- P01 CA229143: Improving Uptake of Cervical Cancer Prevention Services in Appalachia
His research team operates within the Markey Cancer Center's Cancer Prevention and Control Program, conducting community-engaged studies across Appalachian Kentucky while mentoring the next generation of rural health disparities researchers through structured training pipelines.
