Maartje Basten is an Assistant Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Science's Health Sciences department. She holds dual roles in Methodology and Applied Biostatistics, APH - Health Behaviors & Chronic Diseases, and APH - Mental Health. Her expertise spans epidemiology and psychology, focusing on mental health across the lifespan. She coordinates the Sarphati cohort study in Amsterdam and leads the COvid-19 measures and Child Outcomes (COCO) project, examining pandemic impacts on children and parents.

Research Interests: Mental health trajectories, prospective cohort studies, psychosocial factors in cancer, HIV epidemiology, and statistical methodology. Her work integrates longitudinal analyses to explore links between mental and physical health, including dementia and stroke etiology.
Recent Research Focus: Studies on HIV cure impacts, cancer risk mediation via health behaviors, and sex differences in stroke risk factors. Methodological innovations in meta-analysis and individual participant data techniques are central to her contributions.
Teaching: Coordinates the Health Sciences premaster program and teaches methodology/biostatistics courses.
