Maarten van Bottenburg is a Professor of Public Administration and Organizational Science at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Utrecht University School of Governance. He leads the 'Sport & Society' focus area and has held roles such as Francqui Chair at Vrije Universiteit Brussels (2017). His expertise spans Sports Policy, the Social Meaning of Sport, and Sports Management. Prior to his full-time appointment in 2009, he lectured at Fontys University (2004–2009) and was Research Director at the W.J.H. Mulier Institute (2002–2006). He has advised numerous organizations, including the Dutch Olympic Committee and major corporations like Nike and Rabobank.
Van Bottenburg's research explores how sport evolves as a social phenomenon, addressing public values and management impacts. His seminal work, Global Games (2001), analyzes sport's cultural dynamics. Key publications include studies on doping, match-fixing, and youth sport policies.
