Michel van Slobbe is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, specifically within the Department of Public Administration and Organizational Science and the Sport and Society research group. He is based at the School of Governance in Utrecht, Netherlands, with his office located at Bijlhouwerstraat 6-8, Room 1.09. His academic work centers on the intersection of sports organizations and broader societal structures.
Van Slobbe earned his PhD in 2019 with a dissertation titled 'Among Us: An Ethnographic Study of Established-Outsider Relations in a Sports Club and Government Intervention,' reflecting his deep expertise in organizational anthropology. His educational background includes studies in public administration and cultural anthropology at Thorbecke Academy Leeuwarden and Utrecht University, where he graduated in 2000.
His research interests span ethnography, sport management, organizational culture, organizational change, sport policy, and anthropology. Van Slobbe approaches these fields through the lens of how everyday practices, symbolic interactions, stories, objects, and language shape public sport organizations. His work often examines the complex relationships between local organizations and broader societal structures, with particular attention to established-outsider dynamics within sports clubs.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on governance issues within sports organizations, particularly examining board diversity, organizational divisions, ethnically diverse management, and the complex role of passion in sports clubs. His research employs ethnographic methods to understand the micro-level dynamics that shape sports governance and organizational culture.
Van Slobbe has been actively involved in teaching since 2001, primarily in the master's program 'Organization, Change and Management.' In 2006, he became course manager for the 'Sport Management and Sport Governance' program. He has also contributed to projects such as 'The end of old-style membership relationships? Organized sports and lasting social ties' (2013-2019) and 'The sports club and social integration' (2011-2014), working with numerous Dutch sports federations representing over 3.2 million members.
His teaching portfolio includes courses on 'Inclusive sport and policy,' 'Intervention and Theory,' 'Qualitative research on governance and organization,' 'Towards a sustainable sport,' and 'Organizing sports in a dynamic society,' where he applies his research insights to practical sport management education.
